Lasius flavus

Yellow Meadow Ant

Easy

Lasius flavus is the quiet cousin of the black garden ant. These yellow, soft-bodied ants live almost entirely underground, tending root aphids for honeydew rather than foraging on the surface. That makes them low-drama to keep — and best suited to keepers who enjoy watching nest life rather than busy outworld foraging.

Keeping notes

Founding is fully claustral and undemanding, just like Lasius niger — set up a test tube and wait. Because they’re subterranean, they strongly prefer darkness and a humid nest; a nest that holds moisture well (such as ytong) suits them.

Don’t expect much surface activity. Their charm is in the nest: brood tending, the soft yellow colour, and steady, calm colony life. Hibernate over winter as with other natives.

Watch for

  • Low visibility — they stay nested, so this isn’t the species for someone who wants busy foraging.
  • They appreciate higher humidity than Lasius niger.
  • Gentle temperament makes them a relaxing, undemanding keep.
