Who this is for

Ant Habitats is for people at the very start of the hobby: someone who has caught a queen after a nuptial flight, or is about to buy their first colony, and wants clear guidance without the jargon, hype, or contradictory forum advice. Everything here is written with a UK keeper in mind — the species you can legally keep, the seasons that matter, and the suppliers you can reach.

How we research and review

Our guides are built on established ant-keeping practice and current UK guidance, cross-checked against how experienced keepers actually raise colonies. We favour the boring, reliable methods over the exciting risky ones, because a beginner's first colony is not the place to experiment.

• Practical and specific — real numbers, temperatures, and timings, not vague reassurance.
• Kept current — every guide carries a "last updated" date, and we revise them as practice and prices change.
• Structured for clarity — checklists, tables, and plain-English definitions, so you can find an answer fast.
• Honest about uncertainty — where timings vary or opinions differ, we say so rather than pretending there's one right answer.

Responsible keeping comes first

Ant keeping is only sustainable if it's done responsibly. We cover only species that are native to or naturalised in the UK, we never encourage keeping tropical or invasive species casually, and we are emphatic on one rule above all others: a captive colony must stay contained for life — never release ants. Where a species is legally protected or genuinely unsuitable for beginners, we say so plainly.
