Troubleshooting: Mould, Mites & Die-Offs
The three problems that scare new keepers most — how to tell what's serious, fix what's fixable, and prevent all three from coming back.
Sooner or later every keeper opens the lid and finds something alarming: fuzz on the cotton, tiny dots moving on a worker, or a pile of dead ants. Most of it is fixable, and almost all of it is preventable. Here’s how to triage each one.
Mould
Harmless vs serious
- A few dark specks on food remains or the entrance cotton — routine. Remove the debris, and it stops there.
- White fuzz on old insect leftovers — the ants usually dump these on their rubbish pile; clear the pile during normal feeding.
- Spreading fuzzy mould on the water-reservoir cotton or nest walls — serious. The colony is living inside a spore factory, and it will not get better on its own.
Fixing serious mould
Set up a fresh test tube (or hydrate a spare nest), connect it to the mouldy home, expose the old home to light, and let the colony move itself. Never scrub mould inside an occupied nest — you’ll spread spores and soak the colony.
Preventing it
Mould follows food waste and stagnant damp. Feed only what the colony clears in a day, remove leftovers, and keep ventilation adequate. In founding tubes, mould is rare precisely because a claustral queen has no food in there — which is one more reason not to feed her.
Mites
The word terrifies keepers, but perspective helps: the overwhelming majority of mites that appear in setups are harmless scavenger species that hitchhiked in on feeder insects or substrate and breed in damp food waste. Genuinely parasitic mites — attached to ants’ bodies and not letting go — are rare.
Triage
- Tiny white/tan dots roaming the outworld or rubbish pile: scavengers. Not an emergency.
- Round mites clamped onto ants themselves, especially several per ant: parasitic. Isolate the colony from other setups; a nest move to fresh, drier quarters is the practical treatment.
Fixing and preventing
Scavenger mites boom when there’s damp waste to eat, so remove their food supply: clear leftovers daily, swap wet substrate, and run the setup a touch drier for a few weeks. Cut off new arrivals at the source — freeze feeder insects for 48 hours before use, buy feeders from clean suppliers, and bake or freeze any collected substrate. A cleanup crew of springtails in naturalistic setups outcompetes mites for the same niche.
Die-offs
Normal deaths
Workers live months, not years. A small, steady trickle of deaths — often stacked neatly in a “graveyard” corner of the outworld — is a healthy colony doing housekeeping. New keepers routinely mistake the rubbish pile for a crisis.
When it’s a real die-off
Deaths outpacing births, workers twitching or unable to walk, or many deaths within a day or two. Work through the usual causes in order:

The common thread
All three problems trace back to the same two variables: excess moisture + waste feeds mould and mites, and environmental extremes drive die-offs. A setup that’s cleaned lightly but regularly, fed modestly, watered reliably, and left in peace almost never develops any of them.
